About the Faculty
The Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences offers a learning environment where staff and students from diverse cultural, demographic and learning backgrounds are welcomed and supported to excel in scholarship, research and professional development of an internationally recognised standard, with particular emphasis on research into issues of relevance to people, identity and place in the tropics.
This is a Faculty with a broad charter, bringing together disciplines from the arts and humanities with a range of professional courses.
Students in the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences will gain valued and important skills – you will learn to be an effective communicator, creative analyst and innovative problem solver.
You will be able to access and evaluate information with the latest technologies, research topics to find solutions to real-world problems, and do so with a sound appreciation of the cultural and societal values involved.
There are opportunities to study overseas for six months or a year and scholarships and bursaries to assist with overseas travel.
If you choose to combine a foreign language with your studies this can enhance your prospects to study and work abroad.
The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Sciences degrees have flexible structures that allow you to tailor your studies to your own particular interests and career plans.
Subjects from other faculties can be incorporated into these degrees, combining the world knowledge and generic skills of the arts and social sciences with those from areas such as business, information technology and health and other sciences. Targeted multi-disciplinary programs have been created with exciting career options in mind. These include Asia Pacific community development, politics and international relations, criminology, journalism, media and professional writing, public communication and public relations.
Professional degrees in Community Welfare, Education, Psychology, and Social Work can lead to accreditation with relevant professional bodies in Australia and in some overseas countries.
A wide range of joint degree programs is also available, combining professional courses with the added breadth of knowledge and research expertise provided by degrees such as the BA.
Discipline studies in areas such as anthropology, archaeology, sociology, politics, history, English literature and Indigenous Australian studies provide students with a rich understanding of Australia’s place in the world and of the importance of international affairs in shaping how we live as global citizens.
Graduates from the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences find worthwhile and rewarding careers in fields that make a difference, such as media and publishing, advertising, in government departments and non-government organisations, in health, private practice, education and welfare services, teaching in schools and the tertiary sector, in policy, cultural heritage, community development, and public and foreign affairs.
Postgraduate study to Masters and PhD is available across all disciplines in the Faculty.
The Faculty contributes to several research foci of the University with its greatest emphasis in the area designated “People, Identity and Place”, which focuses on people and societies in the tropics.
Our researchers investigate individual, social, cultural and political issues and applying individual, community, regional and global approaches to problem solving.
Our students and staff come from many different countries and cultures and take a global perspective to learning. We aim to provide solutions for a better life for people in the tropics worldwide.
