Details:
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must:

be an Australian citizen or permanent resident

have achieved an OP1 or the interstate equivalent
-
have completed your final year of high school in the last 2 years
-
be enrolling in a Bachelor degree offered by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences as a full time student (see eligible degree programs below)
Your application will be judged on:
-
academic merit
-
participation in school or community activities
-
communication skills
-
non academic achievements such as sporting, musical or debating
-
your motivation to succeed in your chosen field

This scholarship will contribute to the cost of accommodation and meals at one of the JCU Halls of Residence in either Townsville and Cairns for 1 year. The money will be paid directly to the chosen residence.

Details:
The Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences Travel Grant was created in May 2004 to provide financial support to students wishing to expand their educational experience by undertaking study at an overseas institution.
To be eligible to apply you must:
-
be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia ;
-
be enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree administered by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences;
-
have completed the equivalent of one year of full-time study of your undergraduate degree or six months of full-time study toward your postgraduate degree at JCU directly prior to departure; and
-
have achieved a credit average or better across your course or have completed confirmation of candidature for higher degree by research students.
The payment will be made upon confirmation of enrolment at the overseas institution.
Supporting documentation:
You must submit the following with your application:
- A Certified copy of your academic transcript to date;
- A statement outlining your planned course of study at the other institution, including planned subjects, and how this will benefit your study at JCU;
- Details on the overseas institution;
- A statement from the relevant JCU Academic Advisor indicating that subjects taken at the other institution are suitable; and
- Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application such as personal references or referees, community service activities and/or membership of clubs or associations.

James Cook University has a number of exchange agreements with overseas institutions however some of these agreements are limited to particular discipline areas. You can choose an Institution that is not included in this listing and still be eligible for the travel grant, however where an exchange agreement does not exist it is likely that you will have to pay full tuition fees to the host university.
Academic staff in your course area may be able to recommend particular institutions to you.

What costs are involved?
Most exchange agreements only exempt the student from paying full tuition fees. The following fees and costs are some of the items that are the responsibility of the student:

visa application charges and compulsory health checks

passport application fees (students who don't have a current passport)

travel costs including airfares, travel insurance, airport taxes and other related expenses
-
overseas student health insurance
-
accommodation costs
-
living expenses
-
text books, photocopying and general study costs

Student Contribution Amount and Student Association fees at JCU*
* You will be required to pay Student Contribution Amounts (formerly HECS) to JCU while away on exchange.
* You will be required to pay student association fees to JCU. If you are required to pay similar fees at the destination university, you should keep the receipt and submit it when you return as you may be eligible for a refund of the JCU fee.

School of Psychology, Maastricht Travel Support Grants

Details
In July, 2004, a Student Exchange Agreement was established between the School of Psychology , JCU, and the Faculty of Psychology, University of Maastricht . This Agreement allows for the exchange of up to four students per year, with students paying tuition fees (HECS) only to their home University.
From two to four awards totaling $10,000 will be awarded each year. Students planning to spend a full academic year (two semesters) studying in Maastricht are eligible to apply for $5,000 travel support from the School. Students who plan to spend just one semester studying at Maastricht are eligible to apply for $2,500 travel support. Payment of the award will be made upon confirmation of the student’s enrolment at Maastricht University .
Eligibility Criteria
The School’s Maastricht Travel Support Grant will be open to competition among candidates who:

Are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia ;
-
Are enrolled in one of the School’s APS accredited undergraduate degree programs;
-
Have completed the equivalent of one year of full-time study in their APS accredited sequence directly prior to applying for the grant; and
-
Have achieved a distinction average or better across their course and across all their Psychology subjects.
Selection Criteria
The Selection Committee will, in the exercise of their absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:
-
Academic merit;
-
The merit of the proposed course of study; and
-
Any other criteria that the selection committee deems appropriate, including whether the candidate has, or will receive any other scholarship assistance during their studies.

Students who receive one of the Travel Grants administered by the Faculty of Arts, Education, and Social Sciences will be deemed eligible for a School travel award only if undertaking two semesters of study at Maastricht . In such cases, the Award will be in the amount of $2,500.

Loans
OS-HELP
OS-HELP is an initiative of the Australian government that will provide financial assistance to eligible students who undertake part of their course of study overseas. OS-HELP assistance is a cash loan which may be used to cover expenses associated with the overseas study, such as airfares, accommodation and other travel or settling expenses.
